Introduction: Futsal Game Systems

Learn about the main Futsal Game Systems, from the most basic to the most advanced.

The Futsal Game Systems

There are different forms of Futsal game systems, both defensive and offensive systems. In other words, a tactical system is the way a Futsal team positions itself on the court.

How to choose a tactical system?

The choice of game system for a futsal team must be based on the characteristics of the players that make up the team. If you are a futsal coach, don’t try to impose a tactical scheme on your team without taking into account the characteristics of your players.

The best tactical formation depends on a few factors:

  • Who are you playing against?

  • What are the characteristics of the players on your team?

  • What is the level of physical conditioning of the players on your team?

” The best way to apply any tactical system is to keep in mind how your basic defensive formation, i.e., when your team runs out of possession of the ball, is that pattern of organization that the players should follow on the court.”

Understand! When the team is attacking the Futsal tactics are also important, but due to the great movement for the occupation of space, there should not be a rigidity in the positioning of the players in the attack.

Below we will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the main tactical systems in futsal.

2×2 Futsal Game System

Futsal Game Systems: System 2x2 in futsal

The 2×2 Tactical System in Futsal, also known as “Square“, basically divides the four linemen of a team into the two main areas of responsibility: defense and attack. It is a simple system that can help develop good defensive and attacking pairs.

Although two players are told to stay further forward (in attack) and two to stay back (in defense), these roles will need to be very flexible, as the attackers will need to help the defense and vice versa. In addition, most teams attack and defend with at least three players.

Advantages of the System 2×2 in Futsal

  • Great system for beginners

  • It gives balance between attack and defense.

  • It ensures that the defense and the offense have at least one player at all times of the game.

Disadvantages of the System 2×2 in Futsal

  • Restricts player movement

  • Can be defensively weak if defenders join the attack and attackers are unwilling to fulfill defensive roles

  • If the team is poorly trained or does not communicate well on the court there can be confusion between which attacker should support the defense and which defender should support the attack.

2x1x1 Futsal Game System

2x1x1 system in futsal

The 2x1x1 system in futsal is a variation of the 2×2 system.

  • Also simple and easy to learn.

  • It has two players dedicated to defense.

  • It has a “mid” player to give more defensive balance and offensive variations.

Futsal’s 3×1 game system

This is one of the most common formations in Futsal, it provides balance between defense and offense. It has a player dedicated to attack (the pivot), while there is also a player dedicated to defense (the winger). There are also two wingers, the Right Wing and the Left Wing who should support both defense and attack.

Advantages of the 3×1 System:

  • There is clearly a player with the main defense specialist and an attack specialist

  • The team becomes more compact both in defense and attack

Disadvantages of the 3×1 System

  • If both wingers concentrate too much on the attack this will leave the defense very exposed and Fixed overloaded

  • It can also overload the Pivot, in case the Wings have offensive difficulties

Futsal 1×3 System

1x3 system in futsal

The 1×3 system in Futsal is a more offensive variation of the 3×1 system.

  • It is extremely offensive.

  • It requires a high marking line, with pressure on the opposing team’s ball output.

  • It requires a lot of physical intensity and offensive movement.

  • It keeps only one player fixed in defense and therefore becomes fragile defensively.

Futsal’s 4×0 Game System

4x0 system in futsal

The 4×0 tactical system in futsal is used by high-level teams, such as professional teams. The idea is to have all 4 players moving at once, promoting a movement that allows for many table options, space occupation, and attacking opportunities.

Advantages of the 4×0 System in Futsal

  • Promotes more dynamic team movement

  • Always allow table options

  • Makes the opposing team’s defense more difficult due to its great movement

  • Physically it can wear down the defending team

  • The ball moves extremely fast

  • Great option to keep possession

  • Facilitates the occupation of space

  • Best way to get off the mark under pressure

  • Hinders the opposing team’s coverage

Disadvantages of the 4×0 System

  • Everyone on the court MUST understand the system otherwise it won’t work!

  • The players must be extremely well conditioned physically

  • If the players focus too much on movement, the team becomes predictable and unoffensive

  • The players MUST be good technically

  • Players MUST be agile

  • It generates a lot of physical wear and tear

Futsal 0x4 Game System

0x4 system in futsal

It is a more offensive variation of the 4×0 system.

  • There is marking under pressure.

  • It requires intensity and physical strength.

  • Used in the final part of the game when the team needs to turn the score around.

  • There is not much elaboration in the playmaking, it depends on the shots made by the goalkeeper.

  • It is defensively fragile. Leaves too many gaps for the opposing team’s counterattack.

Futsal’s 3×2 game system

3x2 system in futsal

The 3×2 Tactical System in Futsal happens when the goalkeeper (Line Goalkeeper) leaves his area to participate in the team’s attacking moves. Usually the goalkeeper is replaced by a line player, to make this system more efficient offensively. With this formation the players do not change positions very often. They try to tire the defenders by passing the ball quickly to all corners of the court.

DETAIL: In the image above, the goalkeeper (in yellow) is positioned in the attacking area, this happens because the Futsal rule restricts the possession of the ball to the goalkeeper in the defense area, he cannot receive the ball more than once and cannot keep it for more than 4 seconds (being in the defense area).

“In this formation it is important that the players are very precise in their passing and wait for a clear opportunity to shoot at goal, because a hasty shot or a wrong pass can be fatal, since the goalkeeper will be out of his goal.”

Advantages of the 3×2 System

  • You create a numerical advantage when attacking

  • Enables the creation of clear finishing opportunities

Disadvantages of the 3×2 System

  • There is a great risk of conceding a goal on the counter-attack, since the goalkeeper is out of the goal in this system

  • The team can play with a goalkeeper who is not a specialist in defending

2×3 Futsal Game System

2x3 system in futsal

The 2×3 system in futsal is an even more offensive variation of the 3×2 system in futsal.

  • It has 3 players infiltrating near or inside the opposing team’s goal area.

  • It has two players setting up plays in the middle of the court.

  • It is extremely vulnerable to counterattacks and long distance shots from the opposing team.

  • Used in the final part of the game when the team needs to turn the score around.
