The central playmaker in handball is the team’s “brain”, the organizer of attacking moves. As the name already says, the Central Point Guard acts for the center of the court arming his team’s moves.

Wingers in handball are fast players who are fundamental to the attacking actions of a handball team and who play close to the side lines of the court.

They are characteristics of a Tip in Handball:

• Speed and agility
• ability to take shots at a low angle
• skill and precision in throwing
• ability to change the direction and shape of the pitch during the throwing act
• position quickly to pull a counterattack

“It’s common in handball for the right winger to be a left-footed player and the left winger to be right-footed, as this characteristic helps the winger to gain more angle when shooting from the side of the opponent’s penalty area.”

The Pivot in Handball

The Pivot in Handball is a player who moves in attack between the goal area line and the 9-meter line.

They are features of a Pivot in Handball:

• Open up space in the opponent’s defense for their teammates to infiltrate and shoot
• Finding spaces in the opponent’s defense to position yourself and receive the ball in a position to take a shot
• Have a varied repertoire of shots to finish the game when they receive the ball in a position to score a goal

The Goalkeeper in Handball

The goalkeeper in handball is usually tall and fast. In addition to his defensive characteristics, the handball goalkeeper must know how to act as a line player and have a good passing game to initiate a counter-attack.

They are characteristics of a Handball Goalkeeper:

• Having a good position for each type of opponent’s shot
• Be brave enough to meet your opponent’s strong shots
• Having good ball timing, i.e. knowing the right time to move towards the ball to defend a shot
• Having vision and a good long pass to pull off counter-attacks after making a save or winning possession of the ball
