The origins of volleyball in Brazil
The history of Brazilian volleyball has two divergent versions. The first version says that volleyball arrived in Brazil in 1915 and was first played at the Marist College in Pernambuco. The other version says that volleyball arrived in Brazil in 1916, being played for the first time at the Associação de Cristãos e Moços de São Paulo.
The Evolution of Volleyball in Brazil
In the 1940s and 1950s, there was no exchange between Brazil and other more developed volleyball countries. At the 1956 Men’s World Cup, the Brazilian team didn’t know some basic volleyball fundamentals, such as the headline.
Brazil had a low average height compared to other countries, around 1.80 meters, while the average height of the sport’s powerhouses at that time was around 1.90 meters.
In the 1950s, the creation of the Volleyball School by Jorge Bittencourt, or Jorginho, contributed greatly to the technical development of Brazilian volleyball.
History of Volleyball in Brazil in the 40s and 50s
- 1944 saw the 1st Brazilian Championship
- 1954 the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) was founded
- 1955 saw the 1st South American Championship
Curiosity about the History of Volleyball in Brazil
In the 1950s, volleyball was rarely practiced by men in Brazil. There was a perception that volleyball was a sport for women, with effeminate gestures. To the point where the ‘breaking’ of the wrist to make the cut was only suitable for women. Despite this totally prejudiced idea, it helped the development of Women’s Volleyball in Brazil.
Volleyball in Brazil in the 1960s
In the 1960s, Brazilian volleyball won fifth place at the Men’s World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. In 1964, Brazil’s men’s team came 7th in their Olympic debut.
History of Volleyball in Brazil in the 1970s
In the 1970s, Brazilian volleyball evolved a lot, especially in terms of physical preparation.
In 1975, there was a major modernization in the management of the CBV – the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation – when Carlos Nuzman took over as president.
Volleyball in Brazil in the 1980s
In the 1980s, Brazil began to achieve significant results on the world volleyball stage. A Silver medal at the Men’s World Cup in Buenos Aires, Argentina and a Silver medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in the United States.

“Due to the international success of the Brazilian men’s volleyball team, a major friendly match was held at the Maracanã Stadium against the Soviet Union to a record crowd of over 100,000 people.”
Volleyball in Brazil in the 1990s
In 1992, Brazilian volleyball achieved its first major victory, a gold medal in men’s volleyball at the Barcelona Olympics.
Since the 1990s, Brazil has accumulated a series of Olympic and world titles in both men’s and women’s volleyball.
