Unauthorized Return in Futsal
Unauthorized return in Futsal is a very specific rule that can cause confusion among players, team members, and even referees.
An unauthorized return of a player in Futsal, while it may seem harmless, carries disciplinary consequences and affects the flow of the match.
The Rule is Clear: Authorization is Essential
It is crucial to understand that any player who needs to leave the court (whether for an injury, equipment change, or any other reason requiring permission) can only return with the express authorization of one of the referees. Acting independently can be costly for the team.
What Should Referees Do?
Upon noticing that a player has returned without permission, referees will follow a specific protocol:
Interruption of Play (Not Always Immediate): The match is not necessarily stopped the very instant it happens. If the returning player does not directly interfere with the game (i.e., does not actively participate in the play) or obstruct a referee, and if the opposing team is in an advantageous situation, the referees may choose to wait before interrupting.
Yellow Card: Regardless of whether the interruption is immediate or not, the Futsal player who enters the court without permission will be cautioned with a yellow card. This is a punishment for unsporting conduct.
How is the Game Restarted?
The way the game is restarted will depend on whether or not the improperly returned player interfered:
With a Direct Free Kick or Penalty (if there is interference): If the player interferes with the play or an opponent, the match will be restarted with a direct free kick from the location of the interference. If the interference occurs inside the penalty area, a penalty kick will be awarded and a cumulative foul will be counted for the offending team.
With an Indirect Free Kick (if there is no interference): If the player returns without authorization but does not interfere with the game in any way, the game will be restarted with an indirect free kick.
Attention: Not All Unauthorized Returns Are Fouls!
It’s important to note that crossing a boundary line as part of a natural playing movement is not considered a foul in Futsal. For example, if a player goes off the court to control the ball and returns quickly, this is part of the dynamic of Futsal and will not be penalized.
The foul only occurs when authorization is needed for the return and that authorization is not requested from the referee.
Staying aware of these nuances of the Futsal rules is essential for players, coaches, and everyone who enjoys good old Futsal. Knowledge of the rules ensures a fairer game and avoids unnecessary penalties.
