CAPOEIRA MOVES

Capoeira is more than just a physical activity or a dance with strong cultural roots. Anyone who knows and has seen a good capoeirista in action can see that, within the beautiful and rhythmic game of atabaques and berimbaus, there are capoeira moves that can knock out any experienced fighter.

If you want to learn what these capoeira moves are and their importance for defense and attack in the game, or in a real situation where you need to defend yourself, you’re in the right place.

We’ve put together this complete article with the main capoeira moves you need to know, including a Capoeira video lesson for beginners, follow along!

BENEDICTION

The benção is one of the best known and most used capoeira moves in rodas and capoeirista fights around the world. This is due to its ease of execution and, of course, the potential for trauma and knockdown that this front kick has.

  • The back leg is thrown forward with a knee bend until the sole of the foot hits the opponent.

BRIDGE

Speaking of capoeira moves, after talking about the “benção”, we can’t help but mention a variation of it, the so-called ponteira. The ponteira is also very easy to teach and apply, but it requires a certain elasticity on the part of the capoeirista.

  • The back leg, at the base of the ginga, is projected forward in a straight line and the leg, when projected forward, causes the tips of the toes to hit the opponent.

(This blow is traumatizing, it may not knock you out, but it will undoubtedly leave bruises and cause severe pain)

MARTELO

Still on the subject of capoeira blows, which can be used both in and out of ginga, we have the hammer, one of the easiest blows to learn but the most capable of knocking out an opponent.

Depending on the capoeirista’s amplitude and elasticity, this blow can be used to hit the legs, torso and/or head.

  • The back leg is projected forward while the front leg, which serves as the base, rotates the foot by 90 degrees, making the body turn sideways during the execution, the upper part of the metatarsals hit the opponent and return to the starting position.

HALF MOON FROM THE FRONT

Capoeira moves, the main capoeira moves

The front half-moon is one of capoeira’s intermediate-level strikes. Its execution and applicability requires a lot of cunning and dexterity from the fighter, because it’s unlikely that a capoeirista will be able to hit or knock someone out with a front half-moon.

It’s used more to open up some distance from the opponent, or to get them into a position where they can use another blow.

  • Keeping both legs side by side, with an opening, one leg is raised into the air, running at an X angle in a semicircle in the air.

ARMED

The armada is undoubtedly one of capoeira’s best-known and most widely seen moves. Its simultaneous execution between two capoeiristas gives the game a beautiful elasticity.

What not many people know is that all this beauty hides a strong danger. I’ve seen many people knocked out with an armada because they didn’t take care of themselves, or because they were inattentive to the game.

  • The body performs a 360-degree turn, while the back leg is raised, making a turn in the air with the outside of the foot and the heel being thrown at the opponent’s face.

RABO DE ARRAIA

The rabo de arraia is one of the most traditional blows and requires a certain amount of experience and training on the part of the capoeirista performing it.

Whether in the roda or in an atypical situation where you have to defend yourself, the rabo de arraia is one of capoeira’s strongest blows and, if applied well, will take anyone to the ground.

  • The body rotates 360 degrees and the leg is raised to the height of the opponent’s face, just like in the armada, the difference being that the hands are resting on the ground during the execution.
