MMA is almost another language and, in fact, could even be considered a different language. The language of combat sport.

If we stop to pay close attention, we’ll notice that some MMA terms are strange, but their unknown meanings make them difficult words to understand.

MMA DICTIONARY: THE MEANING, PART 1

Let’s start with the easiest words:

  • MMA: Refers to the style of martial arts that mixes several fighting disciplines into one, the acronym standing for Mixed Martial Arts;

  • UFC: stands for Ultimate Fighting Championship, the largest MMA organization in the world;

  • Octagon: The place where MMA fights are held;

  • Exchange: Basically refers to techniques used on the opponent directly, such as blunt blows like headbutts, knees, punches, kicks and elbows;

  • Finish: This can be a blow delivered as a finish to an opponent, or even one of the methods of finishing the fight, such as giving up or knocking out.

  • Raspagem: This is when the fighter who is on the ground manages to reverse position. This happens during the fight on the ground;

  • Striker: A fighter who prefers to fight on his feet;

  • TUF: It’s short for “The Ultimate Fighter;

  • Upset: This term is used when someone you expected to win ends up losing the fight.

MMA Dictionary: Understand the main terms.

Let’s continue our list, because we still have a lot of terms to talk about.

  • Clinch: This is when the fighter is standing in a clinch and grabs hold of the opponent’s arms or body so that the clinch can continue;

  • Cornermen: These are the people responsible for assisting the fighter in the ring in the intervals between each round;

  • Coach: It means to see a coach;

  • IBF: An acronym meaning International Boxing Federation;

  • Infighting: this is a close-range fight where no grappling takes place;

  • Heya: It means to see the dojo;

  • Hook: It means to see a hook;

  • Knockdown: An event in which a fighter is knocked down by a punch, but manages to get back up before the knockout time expires;

  • OMB: stands for World Boxing Organization;

  • Take down: This is when the fighter knocks his opponent down;

MMA DICTIONARY: MEANINGS, PART 3

The MMA dictionary is vast and the terms are well over a hundred, what do you think about getting to know a few more of them?

  • -Yuko: Occurs when the fighter manages to project his opponent and he falls on his side, the aim of which is to immobilize the opponent for 15 seconds. Most commonly used for a tie-breaker.

  • -Double Leg: This is a kind of strike in which the fighter, after suffering a fall, grabs both of his opponent’s legs and lifts them up, causing him to fall backwards onto the canvas;

  • -Dying on fumes: This is a term used by coaches to indicate that the opponent is tired or out of breath and that this is the perfect time to attack.

  • -Maria tatame or Maria Octógono: These are the girls who are always present at martial arts events and who know absolutely nothing about the sport. They are only there to watch the fighters;

  • -Ground and Pound: This is when the fighter stands over his opponent in a ground fight, throwing intermittent blows.

  • -Cornerman: This is how the coaches and partners who instruct the fighter inside the octagon during the fights are called.
